Frequently Asked Questions
Who does the Run honor?
We will be honoring the men and women of the United States military. We will be posting flags, photos, and biographical cards in honor of all fallen heroes from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. We will also be posting flags in honor of all wounded veterans and wounded warriors.
We will be bringing extra flags and cards for all Blue Star families who might want to post a flag for a currently enlisted and/or deployed loved one.
How can I participate?
Join us for one or more miles on any day of the Run, anywhere along our route.
You can run, walk, or bike with us, by yourself, or with other friends and family.
I cannot actively participate but how can I help?
- Tell your friends in your community about the Run. If anyone wants to help sponsor, please let us know.
- Share your story. We are looking for stories to share on the website.
- Help us remember the lives of our fallen soldiers. Continue to tell the stories about the lives of service members and their contributions to our country.
- Help us honor and assist our wounded veterans and wounded warriors. We are asking for individuals to donate a dollar for one or more miles that our runners complete.
What is the route?
The exact route will be available very soon, including the cities that we will be staying in each night.
We will have a team meeting every night in which we will discuss the next day’s events, including the names of the soldiers we will be running for and the families that may be joining us along the route for that day.
How many miles will you run each day?
We plan on running between 50 and 60 miles every day until the Run is completed. We will be running a relay with individual runners completing between 5 and 10 miles on any given day.
What is the Daily Routine for the Team?
We will leave our hotel approximately 6:00 a.m. every morning and go directly to the day’s starting point in a multi-vehicle caravan. Around 6:30-7:00 a.m., the team will gather at the start point for a short and informal ceremony that will include the reading of the names of the service members we will be running in honor of that day. Then one or more runners start running, while other member of the team drive ahead and let several additional runners out farther along the day’s route.
Runners will take turns running one or more miles, starting each mile by posting a flag and the service member’s biographical card on the side of the road on a mile marker, a post, a fence, or some other appropriate location. The miles for each day will typically be completed by noon or early afternoon for each day and the team will spend the rest of the day recuperating, meeting family members, contacting local community leaders and/or law enforcement agencies, and preparing for the next day.
How Can I Find the Team Each Day So I Can Participate?
You can start by checking the website for the location of the daily route. We will be available by phone during the entire Run. Those contact numbers will be posted on the website.
When you drive to the route for a particular day, start looking for vehicles with magnetized signs stating OPERATION HONOR OUR HEROES. If you want to join our caravan as we leave each morning, check the website for our location and/or call us for information. You can join us at the starting point for the day’s route, or we can arrange an exact meeting place later in the day if you are trying to meet us for a particular service member’s mile. Or you can check the website and find the names of service members we will be honoring that day and you can look for us along the route for that day. Since there are several runners on the route at any one time, we cannot predict times for certain miles earlier than the day of each run. The route for each day is outlined on this website.
How many runners will participate?
We have a core group of runners that will be with the team for the entire run. Other runners may join us along the way as we move across Texas.
Does the Run have a political agenda?
NO. We run to honor fallen service members, wounded veterans, and their families.
Lone Star Trail of Heroes: Run AcrossTexas is an apolitical event that brings families and friends together who have been affected by Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We intend to celebrate the lives of our fallen heroes, honor our wounded warriors and veterans, and recognize the contributions of all men and women of the United States Armed Forces. As we run from city to city we hope to awareness about the needs of our wounded veterans and their families. Ultimately we hope raise funds to assist wounded heroes and their families.
What is the Mission?
The mission of OPERATION HONOR OUR HEROES is to meet the unmet needs of wounded warriors and wounded veterans. As a part of that mission, we are sponsoring the Lone Star Tail of Heroes: Run Across Texas. We will be posting a flag and a biographical card for every Texas fallen hero and we will also be posting flags to signify and honor all wounded veterans and their families. We hope to raise funds during this journey to help us accomplish our goal of assisting wounded warriors and wounded veterans.
What are the biographical sign cards for each service member?
Each memorial card will contain the photo and biographical information for each fallen hero. Students and JROTC cadets from Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Marcus High School in Flower Mound, the Leander I.S.D. (Cedar Park, Leander, Vista Ridge, Rouse High Schools) and Bowie High School in Austin are creating these personalized cards that will be placed in remembrance and honor of each fallen soldier.
